How the Provinces Differ

Canada does not have a single national recycling standard. Each province administers its own extended producer responsibility (EPR) framework or municipal system.

Ontario

Blue Box Transition to EPR

Ontario shifted full Extended Producer Responsibility to producers in 2023, moving away from the municipal Blue Box program. Accepted materials now vary by producer-run collection points.

British Columbia

RecycleBC Program

BC operates through RecycleBC, a producer responsibility organization handling packaging and printed paper. Residents use depot drop-off or curbside collection depending on municipality.

Quebec

Consignation and Municipal Collection

Quebec uses a deposit-return system for beverage containers and runs municipal curbside collection for packaging. The province is in the process of modernizing its EPR regulations.

Alberta

Alberta Recycling Management Authority

ARMA oversees electronics, paint, used oil and tire recycling. Residential packaging recycling is handled at the municipal level, with no single provincial curbside standard.

Nova Scotia

Resource Recovery Fund Board

Nova Scotia has one of the highest diversion rates in Canada. The RRFB oversees multi-material curbside collection, electronics stewardship and organic waste programs.

Manitoba

Multi-Material Stewardship

MMSM (now part of Recycle Everywhere) manages residential packaging recovery in Manitoba. Curbside programs vary by municipality, and depot locations handle items not accepted at curb.
